Lifts

Passenger

  • Lift car not level with each landing floor which can result in a trip hazard
  • No service records available – engineer surveyors will always review the service reports and any faults / common issues which have arisen since the last Thorough Examination
  • No safety barrier on site – it is advised that all passenger lifts have emergency safety barriers located within there for when any landing doors are open and there is a possibility of a person falling down the lift shaft
  • Lift rope internal corrosion – shows as red iron oxide on the outer surface of the rope, ropes in this condition must be replaced
  • Emergency call system / dialler inoperable - all lifts installed from 1998 onwards are required to have a means of two-way emergency communication. All lifts in a place of work or with public access, no matter what the lifts age, are required to have two-way emergency communication, a ‘place of work’ being inclusive of any building where people are working, including cleaners and concierge workers in residential buildings
  • Rail oil containers empty – majority of lifts have oil pots which lubricate the rails as the lift goes up and down allowing it to move freely
  • Shaft lighting inoperable – the shaft lighting is there to assist the service engineer or the competent person who is carrying out a thorough examination

Goods

  • Lift doors misaligned / damaged
  • Leaks in hydraulic system
  • Lift rope internal corrosion – shows as red iron oxide on the outer surface of the rope, ropes in this condition must be replaced
  • No signage to inform that is goods only – goods lifts should not be used for lifting persons and this should be clearly signed on the outside of the lift, a goods lift has no safety devices fitted
  • No service records available
  • Door interlocks faulty – allowing access to the lift shaft during operation

Platform / wheelchair

  • Safe Working Load not clearly marked – without a visible SWL the platform shouldn’t be used because there is a potential for it to be overloaded.
  • Panels Bent – Bent panels can result in voids were digits or limbs could potentially become trapped resulting in serious injury.
  • Floor bolts loose – these should be checked regularly and the equipment taken out of service when there is a danger of instability
  • Emergency stop button inoperable
  • Platform stop flap not working – allowing potential movement of wheelchair
